5 Tips to Protect Yourself Online
Dear Howard University Community,
October marks the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is the perfect time to brush up on the habits and knowledge that help keep our digital lives secure.
In today’s digital world, it’s not just about firewalls and antivirus software; it’s about people. This week, we're introducing the concept of the Human Firewall: a proactive, informed mindset that every student, faculty member, and staff member can adopt to help protect our community.
Security isn't just technical, it’s personal. Here are five principles that can help you become a stronger human firewall:
- Identify Threats - Stay alert for phishing emails, suspicious links, and social engineering tactics.
- Maintain Physical Security - Lock your devices, secure sensitive documents, and be mindful of your surroundings.
- Report Incidents - If something seems off, say something. Early reporting helps limit the damage.
- Use Common Sense - Strong passwords, no credential sharing, and a healthy dose of skepticism go a long way.
- Follow Policy - Security policies exist for a reason. Knowing and following them protects everyone.
Remember: Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. By staying informed and vigilant, you help create a safer digital environment for everyone.
