Strengthening Transparency & Fiscal Stewardship in Cloud Services

Howard University continues to strengthen its approach to security, financial transparency, accountability, and responsible technology management. As part of this effort, the Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) team has implemented a structured Azure Resource Provisioning and Charge-Back Model to ensure researchers only pay for the cloud resources they use while maintaining clear visibility into costs and usage.

Network Transformation Successfully Completed

We are pleased to share that Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) has successfully completed our Network Transformation initiative, meeting our project deadline. After more than a year of strategic planning and preparation, all 85+ campus buildings have been successfully transitioned to the Ralph Bunche Data Center, marking a transformative milestone in our digital infrastructure modernization.

Scheduled Network Upgrade During Winter Break

As we approach winter break, Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) would like to share important information about a scheduled network infrastructure upgrade to enhance campus connectivity and performance. In partnership with core vendors, ETS is completing a major Network Transformation initiative by transitioning our network from the Wonder Plaza Data Center to the new Ralph Bunche Data Center, ensuring a more secure, resilient, and future-ready environment.

Microsoft Windows 10 Support Has Officially Ended

Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. This means: Microsoft will provide no further security updates, patches, or technical support. Devices still running Windows 10 are now considered at risk for cybersecurity vulnerabilities and compliance issues. Microsoft’s latest supported operating system is Windows 11, which includes enhanced security, performance, and accessibility features.

A Phish Could Cost You More Than You Think

Welcome to Week 3 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This week, we’re turning our focus to one of the most serious and persistent cyber threats: Ransomware. What is Ransomware? Ransomware is a type of malware that locks your files or systems and demands payment to release them. Most attacks begin with a phishing email, where a user unknowingly clicks a malicious link or downloads an infected attachment. The malware quietly encrypts key files before displaying a ransom demand, often with a short deadline and increasing penalties for nonpayment.

Windows 10 Support Ending, Upgrade to Windows 11

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. After this date, Windows 10 devices will no longer receive security updates, leaving them vulnerable to security threats. To safeguard our network and data, Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) will no longer support computers running Windows 10 after this deadline. We will begin upgrades in advance and complete them well before Oct. 14 to ensure a smooth transition.

Important Update: Enhanced Security Measures for MS Teams Meetings

Starting February 22, 2025, we are rolling out an important update as part of our continued commitment to enhancing the security of our online meetings and protecting sensitive data. What’s Changing? Starting February 22, 2025, all unverified and anonymous users will be required to complete a CAPTCHA, and third-party note-taking applications will no longer be permitted to join MS Teams meetings.

Quarantine Email Release

We would like to inform you that ETS will activate the self-release feature of quarantined messages in Outlook. Essentially, you will be able to release safe, expected messages that may have been quarantined. What is quarantine, and why is it important? As part of our efforts to continuously protect the Howard community from digital harm, incoming emails are quarantined if Office 365 is unsure if the message is safe. This feature is an automated security measure designed to shield Howard University from suspicious emails that may be a potential security risk.

Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) and MFA device Registration

Dear Howard University Community, We write to inform you about an upcoming change to our cybersecurity policy that will affect the self-service password reset (SSPR) and multifactor authentication (MFA) device registration processes. When will the change happen? Why is this change necessary?  Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, ETS will enhance the self-service password reset (SSPR) portal by requiring two methods of authentication when initiating a self-started password reset.
