Cybersecurity Awareness Month Week 3: Data Security and Passwords

Welcome to Week 3 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

Strong passwords protect your peace of mind by keeping your digital life secure and personal information out of the wrong hands. As members of the Howard community, it is important to recognize the value of the information we protect and the potential consequences if that information is compromised.

Why Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication Matter
Password security plays a critical role in protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.

However, even strong passwords can be exposed through data breaches, phishing attacks, or other security incidents. Using unique passwords for every account helps prevent a compromised password from putting your other accounts at risk.

That is where Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) comes in. MFA adds a layer of security to your login process by requiring two or more different types of authentication factors:

  • Knowledge: Something you know, such as a password or PIN.
  • Possession: Something you have, such as a smartphone, authenticator app, or hardware security key.
  • Biometrics: Something unique to you, such as your fingerprint or facial recognition.

By requiring multiple forms of verification, MFA makes it significantly more difficult for unauthorized individuals to access your accounts, even if your password has been compromised.

Cyber Hygiene Tips & Best Practices

  • Use a Password Manager: Allow a trusted, university-approved password manager to generate and securely store long, unique passwords, so you don't have to memorize them.
  • Enable MFA: Turn on MFA across all university and personal accounts wherever available. When possible, prioritize phishing-resistant options such as passkeys and hardware security keys, followed by authenticator apps.
  • Never Share Credentials: Do not share your passwords or secondary verification codes with anyone, regardless of how legitimate their request may appear.
  • Watch for Unexpected MFA Requests: Never approve an MFA notification or verification request that you did not initiate. Deny the request and report it to your IT security team immediately.
  • Follow University Password Policies: Always adhere to university password policies and guidelines when accessing, managing, or handling institutional information.

MFA and You: Protecting Our Community Starts with You
Whether at work or home, practicing good password hygiene is essential to protecting sensitive information. At Howard University, it is your responsibility to follow established password policies, safeguard your credentials, and use MFA as required. In your personal life, take the same precautions by enabling MFA wherever available and ensuring every account has a strong, unique password.

Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Every step you take to protect your accounts helps strengthen the security of our entire university community. Thank you for doing your part to keep Howard University secure!
