Microsoft Windows 10 Support Has Officially Ended
Dear Howard University Community,
Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025.
This means:
- Microsoft will provide no further security updates, patches, or technical support.
- Devices still running Windows 10 are now considered at risk for cybersecurity vulnerabilities and compliance issues.
- Microsoft’s latest supported operating system is Windows 11, which includes enhanced security, performance, and accessibility features.
What this means for Howard University:
Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) has been actively transitioning all university-owned devices to Windows 11 over the past 12 weeks as part of the ongoing Windows 10 to Windows 11 Upgrade Project. This initiative ensures our environment remains secure, supported, and compliant.
Effective immediately:
- Effective immediately, any device still running Windows 10 will be relegated to the Howard University Guest Network until it is upgraded to Windows 11 or replaced.
- These devices will have limited access to university resources, including shared drives, enterprise applications, and internal systems.
- This restriction is necessary to protect the integrity of the Howard network and prevent exposure to security vulnerabilities.
Immediate actions:
- Faculty and Staff - If your workstation is still on Windows 10, contact the ETS Service Desk or your IT Liaison to confirm your upgrade schedule.
- IT Liaisons - Review your area’s device inventory to confirm all systems have been upgraded or replaced.
Why this matters:
Continuing to use Windows 10 poses significant risks to data security and university operations. Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures protection against evolving threats and aligns with our modernization and cybersecurity initiatives.
