A Phish Could Cost You More Than You Think
Dear Howard University Community,
Welcome to Week 3 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This week, we’re turning our focus to one of the most serious and persistent cyber threats: Ransomware.
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a type of malware that locks your files or systems and demands payment to release them. Most attacks begin with a phishing email, where a user unknowingly clicks a malicious link or downloads an infected attachment. The malware quietly encrypts key files before displaying a ransom demand, often with a short deadline and increasing penalties for nonpayment.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Be cautious with emails and identify phishing attempts.
- Avoid using untrusted USB drives or removable media.
- Use and update antivirus software regularly.
- Secure your mobile devices.
- Follow IT policies.
- Stay alert and report anything suspicious.
