Your Digital Security Checklist for the New Semester

Dear Howard University Community,

As you gear up for the new semester, now’s the perfect time to make sure your devices, accounts, and digital habits are ready to support a successful and secure college experience. Here’s your quick-start guide to being tech-ready and cyber-smart:

Get Connected
Wi-Fi Access—Make sure your device is registered for campus Wi-Fi. Then, use your University credentials to connect to the secure wireless network (HU-WiFi).

Update Your Devices (before the semester starts)

  • Install system updates for your laptop, phone, and tablet.
  • Update antivirus software and enable automatic scans.
  • Patch your apps (especially Zoom, Microsoft 365, browsers, and PDF readers).

Protect Your Passwords

  • Set Strong, Unique Passwords - Don’t reuse old passwords. Create strong ones or use a password manager.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - Turn on MFA for your student email, learning platforms, and any University portal that supports it.

Think Before You Click – Watch for phishing emails and scams
If something looks suspicious, don’t click. Official University messages will never ask for your password or financial info via email. Always verify the sender’s identity, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and never share passwords or login details. If you receive a suspicious message, you can report it to our Cyber Security Team by clicking Report Phishing at the top of your email or by forwarding the message to ets-cybersecurity@howard.edu immediately. Stay safe and protect your data!
Bonus Tip: Bookmark official university login pages instead of clicking on links.

Get Familiar with Tech Resources

  • Enterprise Resource Center: Submit support tickets, find help articles, and track your requests.
  • Enterprise Technology Services: Visit the walk-up in UGL or online for password/MFA issues or general tech guidance.
  • AccessHU: Log in early to your learning management system (Canvas) to check your course materials and updates.

If you have additional questions, open a ticket on the Enterprise Service Center or contact the Service Desk at huhelpdesk@howard.edu. Stay connected with us on Instagram (@ETS_Howard) for the latest updates on technology, events, and tips to enhance your digital experience.

Whether you're joining us for the first time or returning for another great year, welcome! We're glad you're here, and we wish you a successful and rewarding semester.
