Wireless Troubleshooting Tips for HU Staff

Dear Howard University Community,

Are you having trouble connecting to the campus Wi-Fi? You're not alone—most problems can be solved with just a few simple steps. Whether in the office, on the move, or working in a shared space, reliable wireless access is essential for productivity.

This quick guide outlines essential troubleshooting tips to help Howard staff identify and resolve common wireless connectivity issues. From verifying your network settings to checking for VPN conflicts, these steps are designed to get you reconnected quickly and securely.

Stay Connected—Solve Common Wi-Fi Issues in Minutes
1. ✅ Check That Wi-Fi Is Turned On
Make sure your device’s wireless is enabled. Look for the Wi-Fi icon:

  • Windows: Taskbar (bottom right)
  • macOS: Top-right menu bar

To toggle Wi-Fi:

  • Windows: Click the Wi-Fi icon → Select your network → Turn Wi-Fi off, then back on
  • macOS: Click the Wi-Fi icon → Turn Wi-Fi off, then back on

2. 🔌 Connect to the Correct Network
Ensure you are connected to "HU-WiFi" using your HU credentials.
Avoid guest networks, mobile hotspots, or personal devices.

3. ♻️ Forget and Reconnect to the Network

  • Go to your Wi-Fi settings.
  • Right-click the current network → Select "Forget".
  • Reconnect and re-enter your HU credentials when prompted.

4. 🔁 Restart Your Device
A simple reboot can fix network glitches, IP conflicts, or login issues.

5. 🔒 Check for MAC Randomization (Mobile Devices)
Disable Private Wi-Fi Address / MAC Randomization in your Wi-Fi settings for proper authentication.

6. ⏰ Ensure Date & Time Are Correct
An incorrect system time can block certificate-based authentication.
Enable “Set time automatically” in your system settings.

7. 📶 Move Closer to an Access Point
Signal weak? Try relocating near a wireless hotspot or open space.

8. 🔍 Test Other Apps & Monitor System Performance
If the internet seems down:

  • Try using Zoom, Outlook, or Teams to isolate the issue.
  • Check system resource usage:
    • Windows: Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager → Performance tab
    • macOS: Spotlight → Open Activity Monitor → Check Memory and CPU

9. 🌐 Check for VPN Conflicts
Note: Cisco AnyConnect VPN is only for off-campus use. It is blocked on campus by HU’s firewall.

10. 🧾 Verify Credentials or Try HU-Guest

  • Can’t connect to HU-WiFi? Test the HU-Guests network—no credentials needed.
  • Still having trouble? Contact the HU Help Desk for support.
